Vietnam Clears Path for Chinese COMAC Aircrafts

Chinese-built COMAC jets can now fly in Vietnam after Vietnamese officials formally cleared the operation of aircraft licensed by Chinese aviation regulators.
Vietnam's civil aviation policy has undergone a dramatic change as a result of the decision, which the government confirmed on Monday.
China's domestically built passenger jets may make their debut in a market that has hitherto been controlled by American and European manufacturers.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAAV) of Vietnam has suggested that China's approvals for aircraft designs be seen as being on par with those of the US.
China's state-owned aircraft manufacturer COMAC would be able to meet Vietnamese safety and airworthiness standards thanks to this regulation change.
According to a second CAAV document, the proposed regulatory adjustment is anticipated to go into effect on April 30. But before it can be put into effect, senior Vietnamese authorities must approve it.
This move's timing is crucial as the US is increasingly examining Vietnam for its trade surplus.
Vietnamese officials have reaffirmed their intention to buy American-made aircraft in an effort to reduce trade tensions following former U.S. President Donald Trump's renewed campaign for reciprocal tariffs. During a visit by then-President Joe Biden in 2023, Vietnam Airlines signed a provisional agreement for 50 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, while VietJet already has 200 on order.
In the meantime, COMAC has stepped up its attempts to gain traction in the Vietnamese aviation industry.
Vietnam's airlines now have few options due to their reliance on Boeing and Airbus. Competition might be introduced by COMAC's entry, but only if regulatory obstacles are removed.

In addition to providing Vietnamese airlines with an option to Boeing and Airbus, the approval of COMAC aircraft reveals a more comprehensive approach. While maintaining a careful diplomatic balance between its two biggest trading partners, Vietnam seems to be expanding its aviation alliances.
