Veteran Chua Chim Kang Leaves Mediacorp, Wee Wai Lin Appointed as Successor

Mediacorp has confirmed the departure of Chinese news veteran Chua Chim Kang, who stepped down from his role due to personal health reasons. The announcement was made on February 12, with Chua stating that he needed to take a break from professional commitments to focus on his recovery.
Chua, who joined Mediacorp in 2018, described his tenure as both fulfilling and invaluable. In a statement to 8World News, he expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside a professional and dedicated team on meaningful projects.
Following his exit, Mediacorp appointed Wee Wai Lin as the new head and chief editor of its Chinese news and current affairs units. Wee, a veteran in the industry, has been with Mediacorp for over 35 years and previously served as the chief editor of the broadcaster’s Chinese current affairs division.
In her new role, Wee will lead the strategic development and expansion of digital content within Mediacorp’s Chinese news division. She emphasized the team’s commitment to strengthening and broadening digital offerings, ensuring that audiences have a wider range of content choices while also contributing to the promotion of the Chinese language and local Chinese culture.
Chua’s departure comes amid ongoing legal proceedings. He and former media professional Lee Kuan Fung are currently being sued by businessman Ren Xin Wu over an unpaid interest-free loan of S$990,000. Ren, a Canadian national originally from China, claims that the loan was extended in 2017 for a business venture named Homing Holdings, which aimed to promote Mandarin use in Singapore. He alleges that both Chua and Lee failed to uphold their repayment obligations, further accusing Lee of mismanaging the company.
Before his time at Mediacorp, Chua had an extensive career at Singapore Press Holdings, where he spent 18 years and served as the chief editor of the now-defunct Lianhe Wanbao. Despite the ongoing legal challenges, he reiterated his appreciation for his time at Mediacorp.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunities Mediacorp has given me and for the support from my colleagues”, he told 8World News.
