South Korea Targets 6GW Annual Solar Power Distribution in Industrial Areas
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) has unveiled a strategic initiative to boost solar power generation, aiming to distribute 6 gigawatts (GW) annually across industrial complexes over the next six years. This plan is aligned with South Korea’s 11th Basic Plan on Electricity Supply and Demand, which sets ambitious goals for renewable energy expansion.
MOTIE acknowledges challenges in achieving the annual 6GW distribution target, particularly regarding power system stabilization and local community acceptance. To mitigate these issues, the ministry plans to focus on industrial complexes, which are more conducive due to their lower residential populations and planned development structures. These areas, densely packed with companies that consume significant power, are deemed ideal for large-scale solar installations.
“The plan includes comprehensive support throughout the entire process, from site selection and licensing to facility operation”, MOTIE stated. This strategy aims to streamline the integration of solar power within industrial zones, leveraging the concentrated power demand and structured development of these areas.
MOTIE will hold project and investment briefings to encourage participation from industrial tenants. Business models for these solar projects will be crafted through consultations, ensuring they meet the specific needs of the stakeholders involved.
A committee comprising government officials and representatives from related institutions will be established to oversee public demonstration projects and site selection. This year, demonstration projects totaling 240 megawatts (MW) will commence in key industrial clusters, including Cheonan, Daebul, Ulsan, and Pohang. The committee will also explore collaborative approaches involving plant owners and workers to enhance project participation.
This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in South Korea's transition to renewable energy, supporting the nation's goals for sustainable energy development while promoting industrial growth.
