OFA and FMO Team Up to Enhance Farmers' Market Support in Ontario
Ontario's farming community is poised to receive increased assistance in marketing their products at farmers' markets statewide, thanks to a collaborative initiative announced by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) in conjunction with Farmers' Markets Ontario (FMO).
Backed by an initial investment of $50,000 from OFA, this joint endeavor seeks to fortify the bond between farmers and consumers while championing local agriculture. OFA President Drew Spoelstra expressed pride in this partnership, highlighting the pivotal role of farmers' markets as direct avenues for producers to engage with consumers.
The newly unveiled program will allocate funds towards marketing and awareness endeavors to bolster farmers' participation in farmers' markets. Market operators can apply to FMO for financial assistance covering up to 50% of their project expenses, with a maximum grant cap of $2,500. FMO will oversee the program's administration, ensuring fair allocation of funds to qualifying projects.
Elmer Buchanan, Vice Chair of FMO, emphasized the indispensable function of farmers' markets in nurturing vibrant communities and fostering local food systems. He underscored the collaborative effort's significance in spotlighting farmers and enriching Ontario's local food value chain.
Starting in April, interested stakeholders can access application forms and program particulars through Farmers' Markets Ontario. Membership in FMO is a prerequisite for eligibility to receive funding.
As Ontario's largest general farm organization, representing 38,000 farm families, OFA stands as a steadfast advocate for farmers statewide. The organization's Home Grown campaign, geared towards showcasing Ontario's agricultural richness, aligns seamlessly with this latest initiative aimed at bolstering local farmers' presence and promoting their products at farmers' markets.
