Meta's Head of AI Research to Leave as Chatbot Hits New Markets

The vice president of AI research at Meta Platforms announced her resignation this week as the company approaches monetizing its AI technologies.
Joelle Pineau, who has led Meta’s Fundamental AI Research Group, known as FAIR, posted on LinkedIn that she will be departing on May 30 after almost eight years with the organization.
Pineau’s exit occurs at a crucial moment for Meta's initiatives.
In January, Meta stated it anticipates its full-year capital expenditures to range between $60 billion and $65 billion, partly fueled by enhanced investments in generative AI projects.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned then that he believes 2025 will be the year when “a highly intelligent and personalized AI assistant reaches over 1 billion people, and I expect Meta AI to be that leading AI assistant.”
Meta AI is in competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Alphabet's Gemini.
Although the chatbot was introduced in the US in 2023, Meta announced on March 19 that it has begun its rollout across 41 European nations.
Growth is vital for Meta AI, as investors expect major technology firms to generate revenue from their AI initiatives.
As per New Street research analyst Dan Salmon, the expansion into Europe marks the first of many significant moves the company can undertake to potentially generate billions in additional revenue.
“Meta AI has over 700M MAUs [monthly active users] and with its recent expansion to Europe, the path to one billion users is in view, and thus so too is the likelihood for monetization,” according to Salmon.
