LS Electric, a Korean provider of power equipment and industrial automation solutions, announced that it has integrated two of Boston Dynamics' four-legged Spot robots into routine operations at its Busan plant.
These robots will monitor production equipment and assist in quality and safety management as part of a wider initiative for smart factory development.
The firm collaborated with Hyundai Autoever, a systems integration subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, for approximately two months starting in July before officially launching the two robots.
The Busan facility serves as LS Electric's primary manufacturing location for ultrahigh-voltage transformers, a sector experiencing increasing worldwide demand due to the rapid investment in AI data centers and power infrastructure.

The firm stated that Spot will assist in creating a predictive maintenance system that identifies equipment issues prior to causing production setbacks.

Robots are utilized to oversee vapor phase drying, a crucial aspect of transformer production where parts are dried within a vacuum chamber. Spot's integrated thermal camera examines chamber door seals and identifies heat leaks without making contact, while sensors gather heat, noise, and vibration information from pumps, motors, and control panels to identify early indications of malfunction.
The robots patrol the factory floor to oversee temperature- and humidity-controlled equipment through AI-driven visual inspection and are utilized to examine test equipment and utility systems like motors, chillers, and generators for unusual noise or heat.
LS Electric stated that the robots additionally monitor restricted or dangerous zones instead of human employees, minimizing safety hazards and automating repetitive inspection duties.

The firm intends to develop an AI analysis model utilizing data from the Busan implementation and subsequently extend the system to additional production locations both in Korea and internationally.
