Herbert Smith Freehills, a leading international law firm, has bolstered its private capital team in Asia by appointing Anthony Vasey as a partner in its Hong Kong office. Vasey, a seasoned legal expert with over 20 years of experience, is renowned for advising private equity firms, funds, and companies on cross-border M&A, private credit, debt, and restructuring and insolvency. Vasey’s move to Herbert Smith Freehills reflects the firm’s strategic investment in Hong Kong, a key hub for funds operating across the region. Andy Blacoe, Asia head of corporate at the firm, emphasized the importance of Vasey’s addition, highlighting his reputation as a senior adviser and the value he brings to their clients.
Throughout his career, Vasey has been involved in significant transactions, including advising on the business combination of Colonnade Acquisition with Ouster, which resulted in the latter’s public listing on the NYSE, as well as RRJ Capital’s buyout of Holding AG from HNA Group. His expertise also extends to the renewable energy sector, having advised Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners on the divestment of a stake in Taiwan’s Changfang and Xidao offshore wind farm.
Vasey will initially join Herbert Smith Freehills as a legal manager starting 2 September, pending regulatory approvals to practice as a registered foreign lawyer in Hong Kong.
