Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea's leading aerospace and defense company, and Widad Business Group, a Malaysian investment firm, have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on Malaysia's multiple rocket launcher acquisition project for its army. The agreement, though non-binding, signifies a commitment to cooperation between the two entities. It was formalized on May 6 during the Defence Services Asia (DSA) Exhibition and Conference 2024 in Kuala Lumpur.

Representatives present at the signing included Tan Sri Dato Muhammad Ikmal Opat Abdullah, Chairman of Widad Business Group, and Go Sang-hwe, Executive Vice President of Hanwha Aerospace. Malaysian Defense Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Minister Seok Jong-gun of South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration were also among the notable attendees.

Expressing admiration for Hanwha's global reputation in defense solutions, Tan Sri Dato Muhammad Ikmal Opat Abdullah hailed the partnership as a means to propel their business growth in the defense sector. Go Sang-hwe affirmed Hanwha Aerospace's commitment to bolster Malaysia's military capabilities, vowing collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure mutual advancement.

Malaysia's pursuit of advanced multiple rocket launchers and support vehicles, set to replace its aging fleet by 2026, underscores the significance of this collaboration. The K239 Chunmoo, a top-tier self-propelled multiple rocket launcher system deployed by South Korea, Poland, and various Middle Eastern nations, stands out as a potential solution. Notably, it offers versatility, capable of loading two types of rocket pods simultaneously, with each launcher accompanied by an ammunition support vehicle carrying reload pods.

In essence, the MoU between Hanwha Aerospace and Widad Business Group marks a strategic alliance aimed at addressing Malaysia's defense needs while fostering mutual growth and prosperity. With the deadline for final proposals from bidders approaching in the second quarter of 2025, the collaboration sets the stage for innovative solutions to enhance Malaysia's military capabilities.
