Govt. Backs Dr. Wijayasuriya as Chief Digital Economy Advisor
The Government recently appointed Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, a highly regarded professional in the ICT sector, as the Chief Adviser on Digital Economy, aiming to accelerate Sri Lanka’s digital transformation goals. Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Vijitha Herath endorsed the decision, highlighting Dr. Wijayasuriya’s notable contributions to the ICT industry and his decision to step down from a high-profile corporate role to join the Government’s efforts.
“His commitment to Sri Lanka’s digital economy aspirations has been warmly welcomed by industry stakeholders, affirming his credibility and dedication”, Herath stated.
Despite support, some questions arose regarding potential conflicts of interest, as Dr. Wijayasuriya’s name and position still appear on his previous employer's website. Addressing these concerns, Herath attributed it to a possible delay in updating the company’s site, emphasizing that the Government remains confident in Dr. Wijayasuriya’s intentions and commitment to his new role.
Currently, only the official appointment letters have been issued, with strategic initiatives expected to roll out in the upcoming weeks. Herath underscored the Government’s trust in Dr. Wijayasuriya’s leadership, assuring that his expertise will significantly boost the nation’s digital economy agenda.
