CityUHK Announces Appointment of New Council Chairman and Members
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Michael Ngai Ming-tak as the Chairman of the Council for a three-year term, starting on 1 January 2025. The appointment was made by Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, in his role as Chancellor of CityUHK.
Mr Ngai, an alumnus of the University of Cambridge, is a distinguished leader in the business sector with extensive experience in the international financial arena. He currently holds several prominent positions, including Chairman of The Red Group, Chairman of the Asia GreenTech Fund, External Director of COSCO, Independent Non-executive Director of CRRC Corporation, and Independent Non-executive Director of Longyuan Power. Previously, he served as the Managing Director of UBS AG.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr Ngai is deeply committed to national development, the higher education sector, and community services. He is a member of the 12th, 13th, and 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. His contributions to academia include his roles as a Court Member of Hong Kong Metropolitan University, a former Council Member of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and a former Council Member and Chairman of the Institutional Advancement Committee of Lingnan University. Mr Ngai also serves as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Finance Association, is a Fellow Commoner of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, and an Honorary Fellow of Lingnan University.
Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor at CityUHK, warmly welcomes Mr Ngai to the University community. He also extends heartfelt gratitude to Mr Lester Garson Huang, SBS, JP, for his dedicated service as the Chairman of the Council over the years.

In addition, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR has appointed two distinguished professionals, Mr. Eugene Fong Yick-jin and Ms. Grace Yu Ho-wun, MH, to the Council of CityUHK for three-year terms, effective from 1 January 2025.
Mr. Fong brings extensive experience in community service, particularly in education. He has dedicated years to promoting home-school cooperation and has held various public positions on several government committees. He is currently serving as the Chairman of the Committee on Home-School Cooperation.
Ms. Yu has been a Court member of CityUHK since 2019 and is actively involved in the Commission on Children and the Youth Development Commission. She is deeply passionate about children and youth development, having established the 'Grace Yu Ho Wun Youth Development Fund' and collaborated with CityUHK to create more opportunities for young people.
CityUHK also extends its gratitude to the retiring Council member, Dr. Eugene Chan, for his valuable contributions and service to the University over the years.
