According to reports, China's leading EV maker BYD is overhauling its European operations after strategic missteps including failures to sign up enough dealers and hire executives with local-market knowledge and to offer hybrids in markets resistant to fully electric vehicles. BYD has acted quickly to tackle these initial missteps in this vital export market, significantly enlarging its dealer network and providing substantial salary offers to attract executives from European car manufacturers, particularly Stellantis.

In December, the Chinese electric vehicle leader stated that plug-in hybrids would play a vital role in its strategy for Europe. The choice was made following advice from BYD European special adviser Alfredo Altavilla - one of the main executives brought on for BYD's European revival - who informed BYD Founder and Chairman Wang Chuanfu that a purely electric vehicle strategy remained challenging to promote in numerous European nations.

Reports have emerged regarding the hiring of certain European executives, and BYD has openly admitted to issues in the German market. This is the initial comprehensive report on the issues recognized by leaders within BYD and their organized attempts to tackle them. The majority of the executives spoke under the condition of anonymity to address delicate strategic matters.

In December, Altavilla revealed in Italy that plug-in hybrids would be "central to BYD's strategy in Europe" going forward, stating it would be "foolish" to disregard consumer preferences by providing solely EVs.

Altavilla subsequently recruited various emerging managers from Stellantis, such as Maria Grazia Davino to oversee Germany and several other central European nations, Alessandro Grosso in Italy, and Alberto De Aza in Spain.

BYD's drive to expand in Europe is partly driven by its remarkable sales performance in China, which have surged seven times since 2020 to reach 4.2 million vehicles in 2024. Last year, BYD overtook Tesla to become the leading EV seller worldwide and is currently the sixth-largest car manufacturer globally.
