AmazonAmazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., announced the launch of its AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia’s digital landscape. AWS has committed to investing around US$6.2 billion (approximately RM29.2 billion) in Malaysia through 2038, highlighting its long-term commitment to the country's digital economy.

The new AWS Region, which became operational today, offers developers, startups, businesses, and public sector entities in Malaysia access to a broader range of cloud computing services. The infrastructure will enable these organisations to run their applications and serve end users from AWS data centres located within Malaysia, enhancing performance and reliability.

The investment by AWS is anticipated to generate substantial economic benefits for Malaysia, with the construction and operation of the new region expected to contribute approximately US$12.1 billion (RM57.3 billion) to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2038. The development is also projected to create more than 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs annually across sectors like construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications. These roles will be integrated into AWS’s broader supply chain within Malaysia.

The AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region comprises three availability zones strategically designed to ensure low latency, high availability, and enhanced fault tolerance for users. Each zone operates independently with distinct power, cooling, and physical security, while remaining interconnected through ultra-low-latency networks. This infrastructure allows businesses focused on high availability to design applications that can operate across multiple zones, ensuring seamless performance and reducing the risk of disruptions.

With this launch, AWS strengthens its global presence, now boasting 108 availability zones across 34 geographic regions. Plans are already underway to introduce 18 more availability zones and six additional regions in countries including Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, and within the European Union’s Sovereign Cloud.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS vice-president of infrastructure services, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s digital transformation. He highlighted the strategic role the new region would play in accelerating Malaysia’s development as a regional hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation.

Malaysia’s Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, emphasized the significance of this launch in advancing the country’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030. He noted that the establishment of an AWS infrastructure region offers local businesses access to cutting-edge technology, driving digitalisation and fostering competitiveness on a global scale. The minister described the investment as the largest ever made by an international technology company in Malaysia, underscoring its importance in shaping the country’s economic future.

AWS’s extensive service offerings, ranging from analytics and computing to Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning, will empower Malaysian enterprises of all sizes to innovate and thrive in a rapidly evolving digital environment. The new region is expected to meet growing demand for cloud services, enable greater data residency options, and provide lower latency for customers both within Malaysia and across the Asia Pacific region.
