Apple Opens New Research Lab in Shenzhen, China
Apple has officially opened its latest research facility in Shenzhen, China, which focuses on producing flagship devices like the iPhone and iPad. The lab was launched on October 10 in the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong district, following guidelines from the central government in hopes of strengthening the collaboration of tech giants with the city.
It will cover about 215,000 square feet of area. The company has set up this lab as the largest research and development lab in the Greater Bay Area for Apple. About 1,000 staff are expected to work in the lab by drawing talent both from the domestic and international markets. Currently, it is its most extensive lab outside the U.S. facilities, showing how much investment the company is making in the Chinese market.
Apple will conduct extensive research and development at the Shenzhen lab concerning all sorts of products, such as iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro spatial computing technology. Apple has strategically taken this move at this time when competition has increased in China, particularly from Shenzhen-based rival Huawei. According to recent reports by research firm CINNO, Huawei for the first time in four years outstripped Apple in mainland China sales.
Continuing investment in China, besides its already owning several labs throughout the country in Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou, Apple also sets up a new lab in Shenzhen while expanding into other markets like India. In five years, Apple's research and development in China doubled, which speaks to the company's commitment to innovation, collaboration, and being among the closest to the region.
