They play a pivotal part in juggling complex and diverse tasks to ensure that the policies and strategies align with the vision. Their significance lies in their ability to keep the overarching goals in check for the CEO. As we bring the stories of such remarkable COOs, we shed the spotlight on the journey and insights of Yoshiya Ichimura. With his years of knowledge in asset management and additional understanding of international business, compliance, marketing, and HR, he brings a new dimension to the role of a COO at Yamauchi-No.10 Family Office.
Can you take us through your career path so far, in brief?
My journey in the asset management industry began in 1987. While I wasn't an investment specialist, I spent over three decades gaining diverse experience in different functions. At Nomura Asset Management, my early roles were in compliance, human resources, and corporate planning. Even more exciting, as part of a company scholarship program, they allowed me to study investment in the UK. This broadened my perspective and gave me an international exposure. Seeking a change and new challenges, I joined Morgan Stanley Group in 2000 as they launched their new wealth management business in Japan. Three years later, I got an opportunity again at Nomura Asset Management. It was an honor to join them enriched by my experience at a foreign company and in the US market. I took on various leadership roles, including head of international business, head of risk management, and COO of the London office.
Later in my career, I joined Schroder Investment Management Japan, a UK-based asset manager. As part of their executive committee, I oversaw product, marketing, and corporate management for their Japan business. During the pandemic, I found an exciting opportunity at Yamauchi-No.10 Family Office and joined as COO. Strong two-way communication & collaboration are always the foundation for effective leadership and teamwork
Define Yamauchi-No.10 Family Office as an organization and its position in the market.
Yamauchi-No.10 Family Office was founded in 2020 by Banjo Yamauchi, a fifth-generation leader of the Nintendo family. Banjo Yamauchi is creative and pioneering just like his great-grandfather Hiroshi Yamauchi. He transformed a playing card maker into a global entertainment and game giant. He also carries forward the philosophy of 'challenging' the status quo to usher the next generation into innovation
The office's primary goal is not just asset management but also preserving and developing the family philosophy and purpose. It operates primarily in three areas: Philanthropy, Business Incubation, and Investment. Philanthropy and Business Incubation often overlap, aiming to create an interconnected community and culture in Kyoto, Nintendo's hometown. In terms of investment, the office focuses on two strategies: investing in startup companies, particularly those in deep-tech, and transforming traditional Japanese companies to increase their corporate value.
What are your responsibilities at the company? What keeps you passionate about your work?
As the COO, I oversee all aspects of the office, supporting activities in Philanthropy, Business Incubation, and Investment. I am in charge of finance, legal, tax, human resources, general affairs, investment operation and documentation, family support, and being secretary-general for Yamauchi Foundation. I also work as a guardian to protect the family, our activities, and our assets.
A constant desire to learn and improve drives me. I'm naturally curious and enjoy tackling challenges. While my close circle calls me a workaholic, my work brings new challenges and opportunities, which I find exciting. I believe every day is a new learning opportunity.
What are the factors you take into account when shaping the company’s policies?
Our organization is unique, partly because of a nonprofit organization and partly because of the family office. When shaping our policies, we prioritize activities that benefit the community in Kyoto while managing expenses wisely. Additionally, we uphold the family's philosophy, experiences, and heritage. Periodically, we refine our strategies for better efficiency, especially in philanthropic activities.
How do you guide employees to meet the company’s goals? What’s your mantra to lead the team towards success? What’s your leadership philosophy?
As a start-up, we often face unexpected challenges and make difficult decisions. In such situations, it is crucial to have a mindset adaptability, and be driven by passion, and purpose. We emphasize Banjo's founding philosophy of encouraging a challenging spirit within the team. We frequently share ideas, have constructive discussions, and refine our approach as needed. Success lies in, clear communication, cohesive teamwork, and commitment to our shared vision. As I cover wider subjects and sometimes implement various tasks simultaneously, I always pay attention that I should schedule my tasks, review regularly my agenda for the coming few months, manage my time effectively, and communicate with colleagues.
My leadership style is situational. When making decisions and setting the overall direction as a leader, I focus on ‘what’ needs to be done and take calculated risks. If I am expected to be a manager then I lead the team towards goals by focusing on ‘how’ we can solve problems, minimize risks, and achieve.
