Give a brief account of your professional background?

I have been in the Philippine pharmaceutical industry for over 31 years, starting as a one-man company in 1992. Today, my team has grown to around 26 people, and we have achieved nearly 2000 registrations for finished formulations. Throughout the years, we have partnered with 80 to 85 Indian companies and various international collaborators.

My motivation to enter the generics market stemmed from the high prices of local and multinational pharmaceutical products in the Philippines. Recognizing the quality and affordability of Indian generics, I decided to venture into this field and provide accessibility to the Indian pharmaceuticals for the Philippines. Despite initial challenges and misconceptions about India's pharmaceutical industry, I believed in its potential to become a global leader.

A significant turning point came between 1990 and 2001 when a Philippine president supported Indian products and services, benefitting both the IT and pharmaceutical sectors. This backing allowed us to register numerous products, marking a pivotal moment for our company.

Over time, Indian manufacturers improved their presentation, quality control, and compliance with regulatory standards like those in the US. These advancements have contributed to the growth and success of Indian generics in the Philippines, where they currently hold a significant market share of around 4 percent, with further potential for expansion.

The future destination I am heading towards is establishing Indian products, including generics, among the best in the world. I envision my company being known for delivering high-quality pharmaceuticals from India and other parts of the world. We aim to focus on specific therapeutic areas, particularly cancer, and offer target therapies at affordable prices. Our goal is to ensure that patients can access effective treatments without facing financial burdens. We stay updated with rapid advancements in the pharmaceutical industry and are committed to respecting patents while being prepared to introduce generic alternatives as soon as they become available. The future looks promising and holds great potential.

What advice would you give to the budding industry leaders?

My advice to budding industry leaders would be: Success takes time and patience. Nothing happens overnight, so stay determined and persistent. Continuously strive to expand your knowledge and skills. Be open-minded and embrace opportunities to learn from others.

Never compromise on integrity, especially when it comes to medicines and drugs. Remember that what you provide to patients can impact their health and well-being.

While financial success is important, also prioritize how your business can contribute to the betterment of society. Aim to make a positive impact beyond just making money.
