How has your professional and entrepreneurial journey been so far?

My entrepreneurial journey has been a remarkable transition from a successful corporate career spanning 12 years to venturing into business. Beginning at Procter and Gamble and subsequently Coca-Cola and Roche, I gained extensive experience in finance and internal audits across diverse global markets. However, my perspective changed Triathlon event, where I discovered my passion for entrepreneurship. In 2017, I started my own business, initially as a sideline, but it quickly gained momentum, leading me to make a crucial decision. Despite a promising corporate future, I chose to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. My sports business thrived until the pandemic hit, prompting me to explore new opportunities. I capitalized on the demand for COVID products and later expanded into the smart home industry with Smart Home Philippines. Today, I am proud of our growth, with numerous clients and showrooms, and a vision to make smart home technology accessible to everyone.

Could you tell us about the unique experiences the University of the Philippines offers and what did you learn from the campus beyond academics?

During my five-year tenure at the prestigious University of the Philippines, I pursued a double major degree in Business Administration and Accountancy, which is known as the BAA including a graduated cum laude program. It was an intellectually demanding journey, but I consider myself blessed as I effortlessly embraced the challenging curriculum. The university environment fostered a liberating atmosphere, where exploration and self-expression thrived. This unconstrained freedom allowed me to delve into various subjects, including politically polarized topics like politics, economics, and geography. The absence of boundaries in academia instilled in me the belief that there are no limits to what one can achieve. Additionally, the diverse student body, comprising the brightest minds from all corners of the Philippines, elevated my aspirations. Representing the university in a national finance competition remains one of my most significant memory.

Tell us about your leadership approach. What are the guidelines or methodologies you follow as a leader?

Throughout my career, I have wholeheartedly embraced a leadership style focused on nurturing and empowering others, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. This approach entails leading by example and actively participating in the tasks my team undertakes. I firmly believe that to understand their work and provide tangible contributions, I must immerse myself in their responsibilities. Whether it's creating PowerPoint presentations or crunching numbers in Excel, I am deeply involved in their journey toward success. I stay connected to the ground reality of my business by personally visiting construction sites and studying operations. By being aware of the challenges faced by my team and their strengths, I can envision a brighter future and bridge any gaps that may arise. Titles and positions hold no significance to me; we are all human beings sharing the same goals and aspirations.

In light of your strong experience within the industry, what advice would you give to budding industry leaders?

Understanding your purpose is crucial for effective leadership. It is the driving force behind everything you do. Knowing why you go to work and having a clear purpose ensures that you remain energized and never tire of your responsibilities. Challenges and setbacks become mere stepping stones on your journey toward success because your purpose keeps you focused and determined. Great companies distinguish themselves by never giving up, even in the face of adversity. They understand that the path to success is not always smooth, but they persevere with solid conviction, knowing that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Purpose guides and sustains us through the ups and downs of business.
