In the realm of insurance brokerage and management, the role of an efficient leader is pivotal in steering the organization towards success. Their role encompasses not only crafting innovative risk management and insurance solutions but also fostering a culture of collaboration and client satisfaction. Jacqueline Perez-Wenceslao reflects the essence of an effective business leader in this industry. With over 35 years of experience, Jacqueline's journey from a professional accountant to a distinguished insurance broker has been both challenging and rewarding. Her career, which began after earning a Baccalaureate degree in Accountancy and passing the Certified Public Accountant exam, spans various fields including banking, investment, and manufacturing. In 2000, Jacqueline co-founded PhilPacific Insurance Brokers & Managers, Inc. (Philinsure), now one of the top five insurance brokers in the Philippines.

Jacqueline's commitment to family, teamwork, and client delight underscores her leadership philosophy, making her a key figure in the industry. Outside of work, she is a proud grandmother, mother of three, and wife to entrepreneur Nigel Wenceslao. Let’s hear more from her in this one on one interaction.

With over thirty-five years of experience, how has your journey to success unfolded, and what is your guiding principle?

Success wasn't handed to us on a silver platter; it was achieved through perseverance and the support of dedicated partners. We were fortunate to have the right people join our team, which played a crucial role in our achievements. Each milestone reinforced the belief that “tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” Over the years, I’ve embraced the mantra, “don’t sweat the small stuff.” By letting go of minor issues that can weigh us down emotionally, we make the journey easier and more focused on what truly matters.

Can you share what makes the University of San Carlos special and what you gained from your time there beyond academics?

During high school, the Citizen’s Army Training (CAT) Leadership Training for officers challenged me in ways I hadn't experienced before. It was through this rigorous program that I discovered my potential for leadership. As a Company Commander, I had the opportunity to lead and motivate others, helping them excel and achieve their best as a cohesive team.

Could you describe your leadership approach? What principles or methodologies guide your leadership style?

My leadership approach centers on the goal, the team, and the growth of each individual towards achieving that goal and eventually becoming leaders themselves. I focus on motivating team members by linking their work to the broader vision, helping them see how their roles contribute to a greater purpose through clear guidelines. Empowerment and trust are key, allowing team members to work towards our shared vision with confidence and autonomy.

How do you keep yourself up to date with ongoing industry trends to steer your organization towards the future?

To stay current with industry trends and guide my organization effectively, I actively engage with industry and business associations and maintain close connections with industry leaders. I regularly read news updates and participate in forums, training sessions, and conventions. This approach ensures that I am well-informed about emerging trends and best practices, enabling me to steer my organization towards future opportunities and challenges.

What is your vision for the future direction of your company?

My vision for the company's future involves embracing globalization to advance our position in the market. This includes adapting to increasing consumer awareness and evolving demands, outpacing competitors, and seeking alternative support mechanisms to strengthen our presence in the local insurance market. By focusing on these areas, we aim to enhance our global footprint, stay ahead of industry trends, and better meet the needs of our clients, ensuring sustained growth and competitive advantage in a rapidly changing environment.

Based on your extensive experience in the industry, what guidance would you offer to aspiring leaders?

My advice to budding industry leaders is to first immerse yourself in the fundamentals of the trade, gaining a thorough understanding of its intricacies. Build and nurture professional relationships, as networking and collaboration are crucial for growth. Avoid burning bridges, as maintaining positive connections can be beneficial throughout your career. Persevere through challenges and setbacks, keeping your focus on your long-term goals. It's essential to remain undistracted by short-term obstacles and stay committed to your vision. In summary, concentrate on your objectives, embrace learning opportunities, and stay resilient and focused as you navigate your career path.
