BMHS (Bunda Medik Healthcare System) has transformed from a private maternity clinic into a comprehensive healthcare provider with over nine business units spanning 25 locations across Indonesia. BMHS delivers award-winning care, making a significant impact in the healthcare sector. Dr Agus Heru Darjono, the President Director, champions strong leadership for organizational success and prioritizes actively engaging with team members. He focuses on participation rather than giving instructions, promoting both individual and organizational growth.

In a candid interview, Dr Agus shared his journey and discussed the latest industry trends with us.

Can you provide an overview of your educational qualifications & a summary of your professional background & experience so far?

I graduated from IPB University with a PhD in marketing and a master's in human resources. My professional journey began with Pfizer, where I explored various fields, working in medical roles, sales, marketing, and training departments. I eventually became the Regional Training Director, overseeing operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. After completing 22 years at Pfizer, I joined Merck Sharp and Dohme as the Commercial Operations and Development Director, where I worked for about three years. Later on, I moved to PT DaryaVaria as the Human Capital and Human Resource Director, followed by the role of President Director at a subsidiary of Zuellig Pharma in Indonesia. I also worked at Benofarm for a short period before returning to PT Darya-Varia as the Strategy Director. Subsequently, I joined Indofarma and worked there for a year before transitioning my career to the hospital business sector. In addition to my professional journey, I am also an academician and serve as a guest lecturer at prominent universities. I also head the research and development division of GP Pharmacy, representing local manufacturing companies in Indonesia.

Can you provide details about your current organization, Bundamedik Healthcare System, and elaborate on your roles & responsibilities there?

Bundamedik Healthcare System is an integrated healthcare ecosystem engaged in various businesses. We have a vast network of business units, including nine hospitals and an IVF business. Additionally, we operate in the laboratory and diagnostic business with multiple clinics and 25 to 30 laboratories. Our subsidiaries under management include pharmaceutical distribution, emergency response and medical tourism catering to people seeking treatment in Indonesia. We also operate a hotel business near the hospital, providing accommodations for the families of patients who travel from a far. As the President and Director of the company, I manage the asset holdings for the entire group, ensure the smooth functioning of management throughout the network of hospitals, and oversee the other business units. 

What is your leadership approach & how do you mentor your team for professional excellence & career growth?

I always believe strong leadership skills inspire the organization to move forward and achieve its goals. I follow a hands-on approach, engage with my team in daily operations, and ensure practical policies are implemented. My leadership approach is deeply rooted in two key elements: leadership skills and integrity. I believe one must possess these qualities to effectively lead and guide a team. One of my core philosophies is that a leader must proactively reach out to his people, engage with them, and allow them to participate rather than provide instructions. I train my team members to approach each task with sincere effort and to execute them effectively. I assist my team in using project management tools to track progress, providing visibility and accountability throughout the process. These elements guide the team to foster a motivated and efficient team leading to individual career growth and also achieving organizational goals. 

How do you leverage technology in your daily functions as a leader? Additionally, how do you stay updated with the latest technology trends & industry dynamics?

Technology is a crucial tool, but before embracing it, we believe in establishing a solid framework. It's essential to adopt technology that aligns with our requirements, operations, and capabilities. We prepare our team members to utilize the technology effectively and enhance accuracy and efficiency. Throughout my career, I have actively mentored colleagues in strategy and finance and sought guidance from technology experts to stay updated on the latest technological advancements. This approach helps me effectively integrate new technology into our operations and optimize its impact on our organizational goals and objectives.  

As a leader, what advice do you have for aspiring youngsters & entrepreneurs?

My strong advice to emerging future entrepreneurs is to remain highly dynamic and prioritize learning agility. The current market is constantly evolving, and customer preferences have significantly changed over time compared to the past. The business landscape is expected to remain dynamic and evolve every six months to a year. One must be flexible to quickly adapt to changing trends and respond proactively to new risks and challenges. It's crucial to navigate new technologies, stay abreast of advancements, and apply them effectively. The ability to adapt and thrive in a changing environment and the flexibility to meet the demands of the evolving market will help in becoming a successful entrepreneur.
