Obtaining my EMBA from NTU Singapore is a significant milestone in my life that I previously thought was unattainable. This academic achievement has been a transformative experience for me, broadening my perspective beyond the narrow view that is common in professional life. NTU provides a unique environment that promotes networking and global citizenship. Beyond academics, NTU allowed me to tap into a wealth of ideas and strengths and enhanced my personal and professional development. This journey has not only broadened my network but also provided me with a comprehensive approach to addressing industry challenges.

Tell us about your leadership approach. What are the guidelines or methodologies you follow as a leader?

My leadership approach focuses on empowering my team. I encourage unconventional thinking and give them the freedom to make their own decisions while providing guidance when needed. I am convinced that hands-on experience is the best teacher, encouraging continuous improvement and learning. While I provide assistance and limited supervision, I remain available to address issues and guide my team to solutions. This approach has helped many people become self-sufficient, allowing them to advance and excel in their careers. My goal is to create an environment in which team members feel confident and capable of performing at their best.

How do you keep yourself up to date with ongoing industry trends to steer your organization towards the future?

I keep up with industry trends by actively networking and communicating with my focus group. Learning is an ongoing process, and I gain valuable insights from the mariners and seafarers in my network. Understanding perspectives from various levels of the industry is critical. This comprehensive approach ensures that the policies I implement have been thoroughly tested and take into account the needs of the entire organization. By staying connected and informed, I can steer my organization toward long-term success with a comprehensive and inclusive strategy.

What is the future destination you are heading towards?

In my early fifties, I hope to provide a platform for the next generation of industry professionals to learn the ropes. I want to embrace a coaching approach and will continue to work on new projects as an advisor, guiding and mentoring the next generation of leaders.

In light of strong experience within the industry, what advice would you give to upcoming industry leaders?

I would like to advise that adaptability and agility are crucial for long-term success and that when facing a challenge, pause and remember that all problems can be solved.
