Describe Newport World Resorts as an organization and elucidate its market standing.

Newport World Resorts, a prominent integrated resort in the Philippines, obtained one of the country's licenses for constructing and operating international-standard leisure and gaming facilities, aiming to boost tourism. Situated in Pasay City, it combines gaming with non-gaming features like the Newport Mall, luxury hotels, a performing arts theatre, and a MICE venue. Expanding beyond Metro Manila, the company opened another international brand hotel in Iloilo Business Park in 2018. Engaging in philanthropy, the Newport World Resorts Foundation supports communities through projects, scholarships, and disaster relief. Additionally, the 'iLOVEarth' sustainability program aligns with global goals, contributing to the resort's exceptional position in the market as a meaningful tourist destination.

In your capacity as the Chief Legal and Administrative Officer, how do you propose modifications to the company's policies, and what methods do you employ to contribute value to the business?

In my role as the Chief Legal and Administrative Officer, proposing changes to the company's policies involves navigating the inherent challenges of transformation. Change is often met with resistance and a lack of support, as stakeholders could perceive it as disruptive, leading to widened gaps among them. Drawing on my unique perspective within the organization, I leverage my comprehensive knowledge of institutional history, business operations, and goals to identify areas where legal expertise can support and initiate positive change. Collaborating closely with senior management and employees allows me to understand key stakeholders' dynamics and actively participate in decision-making. As the Chief Legal and Administrative Officer, my broad industry perspective enables me to track trends affecting our products and services. This unique position empowers me to recommend and support change by bridging the gap between management's strategic intent and the needs and aspirations of officers and employees. My legal background, combined with the expertise of key officers, becomes the backbone of a successful transition, making the task of challenging norms more acceptable and enduring by providing relevant guidance and legal advice aligned with the organization's realities.

How do you cultivate a culture of continuous learning within your team, and what measures do you take to ensure they stay abreast of the latest regulations?

Encouraging a culture of learning within my team begins with acknowledging that no one possesses all-encompassing knowledge, emphasizing the need to remain receptive to new ideas and adapt to evolving circumstances. I underscore this attitude to my team, stressing the importance of humility in recognizing that, even as their department head, I do not always have all the answers. This realization fosters an appreciation for continuous learning in our profession.

In my role as Chief Legal and Administrative Officer, guiding the team to stay abreast of ongoing regulations is a dynamic aspect of my responsibilities. Encouraging the use of technology for efficient information gathering, I've observed a collaborative shift where team members not only follow my guidance but also initiate information-sharing. Witnessing my team embrace this learning culture brings me immense pride and joy as a leader.

My leadership approach is rooted in unwavering integrity, aligning closely with our company's core principles. The guiding principles emphasize a passion for people, an unrelenting commitment to exceeding expectations, and a belief in the power of teamwork. These values act as my North Star in leading diverse teams, including the Legal and Corporate Affairs, Office Administration, Transportation, and Aviation and Yacht. While there may be various legal and business strategies to achieve objectives, prioritizing values ensures that our teams understand and preserve our organization's interests.

Taking a personalized approach to leadership, I invest time in understanding team members beyond their job descriptions, recognizing their personal challenges, victories, and familial responsibilities. This human-centered approach fosters communication, collaboration, and trust among teams. In addressing legal issues for the resort, a meticulous understanding of facts and applicable laws is fundamental for strategizing a robust legal defense. This involves a thorough analysis of what occurred, why, and an evaluation of available legal remedies to bolster the defense. Considering the facts and laws, I explore win-win solutions and alternatives to litigation that best serve all parties involved. Emphasizing preventive litigation, I advocate for clear contract drafting, outlining rights and obligations to avoid misinterpretation. Encouraging proactive measures, such as formulating policies and procedures, helps anticipate and address potential issues before they escalate into legal problems. While there's no one-size-fits-all strategy, a Chief Legal Officer must exhibit diligence, foresight, and creativity to efficiently and fairly resolve legal matters, emphasizing transaction closure, litigation prevention, and timely issue resolution.

Going forward, what is your future roadmap?

My future roadmap involves embracing the present while seeking continuous growth. To broaden my expertise beyond the legal domain, I plan to engage in business courses, attend seminars, and utilize online tools. Surrounding myself with mentors and absorbing various business aspects, I aim to share knowledge with my team and those open to learning. Accepting new challenges and additional roles, I aspire to mentor others on a similar path. Ultimately, I desire to give back to my family, especially my supportive wife, by leaving a positive impact on the organizations I've worked for and contributing to their improvement.
