Singapore's Thriving Corporate Litigation Scenario

Separator

As technology becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, intellectual property (IP) conflicts have risen globally. Asia has kept pace with this trend, continuing to lead in international patent filings through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). In 2024, Asia accounted for 55.7 percent of total filings, a notable rise from 40.3 percent in 2012.

According to several reports, Singapore is riding this trend, reaching fifth place in the Global Innovation Index (GII). The state city leads the Southeast Asia, East Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region for the year 2023. It is now the highest-ranking Asian market in the index, beating South Korea. In 2023, a total of approximately 19,000 patents were filed, out of which around 4300 patents were granted. While this presents enormous growth opportunities for the business ecosystem in the country, it also presents significant challenges, especially in terms of conflicts and infringement suits. On the other hand, compliance is increasingly becoming a facet of continuing success stories. Ethical guidance and long-term risk management are paramount, whether a startup or an established organization.

All these roads lead to one destination: the need for a strong corporate law partner. The role of legal leaders within organizations has become increasingly important and complex while undergoing a lot of transformation over the past few years. In truth, organizations worldwide now need general counsel to manage the IP & compliance department similarly to operational units and, in turn, directly contribute to organizational growth. We dedicate this special issue to the general counsel in Asia. Do let us know your thoughts.
