| | OCTOBER 20234 The recurring infections after inducting a medical implant in the body is a frustrating medical challenge. The major cause is Biofilm, which comprises disease-causing bacteria and other microorganisms. It is a slimy substance that can grow in medical implants inside patients. The World Health Organization has labeled antimicrobial resistance as a "major threat to human health with significant global economic and security implications." Researchers from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have now found a way to tackle this issue. They have developed a microrobot powered by magnets that can remove build-ups of dangerous bacteria inside medical devices and minimize the risk of infections linked to implants in patients. The robot is designed to cut the risk of infections by removing Biofilm from inside medical devices such as catheters and stents. The researchers proclaim that the robot can remove the substance, linked to more than 80 percent of infections in humans, with fewer side effects compared with other methods.Founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, HKU is the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong. HKU is currently ranked 26th globally and fifth in Asia by QS and 31st globally and fourth in Asia by Times Higher Education.
