However, last year, students enrolled in Singapore universities were allowed to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to complete their assignments, but under strict rules that they have to adhere to, especially regarding academic honesty and plagiarism. Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has announced that students can use AI tools to enhance their learning, but it is "not a replacement for their intellectual contribution." The statement from the helm of the institute said, "Students can use generative AI tools in class, assignments, assessments, examinations... only when explicitly permitted by the instructor".Indeed, attention to the finest details of a student's academic experience, as well as research and development, has been a predominant aspect of SUTD's success as a premium institute in the state city. For instance, SUTD is all set to launch its education strategy, called SUTD Leap, which is built on its vision of design and technology-powered education. In alignment with this vision, SUTD is set to welcome Professor Phoon Kok Kwang as its new president starting August 1, 2024. Prof Phoon, who currently serves as provost, will succeed Professor Chong Tow Chong, an esteemed electrical engineer. Prof Chong will continue to impart his expertise to students as a professor at the university. The leadership transition is a strategic move to bolster SUTD's mission to provide students with practical, real-world experience and foster robust collaborations with industry partners, thereby enhancing the application of their academic knowledge in tangible settings. While SUTD is firm on foolproofing the future, this special issue is an endeavor to look back at the stellar history of the institution through the lens of its prestigious alumni.
