| | JANUARY 20229IN FOCUSJAPAN'S GMO CLOSES FUNDING AMASSING $240M FROM THREE FIRMSThree of its portfolio firms brought in $240 million in capital gains for Japan-based GMO Venture Partners, the company told Tech in Asia. With contributions from 2C2P, significant profits were made by the fintech companies Coda Payments and GMO Payment Gateway Singapore. Forbes Japan's 2023 list ranked founder Ryu Muramatsu, who founded the VC company in 2005, as the most significant venture investor. The first investment made by GMO Venture Partners through its 2 billion yen ($15.1 million) Global Payment Fund was in Coda, a company that specializes in in-game payments. Moreover, the VC oversaw Coda's series A round.According to Muramatsu of Forbes Japan, this investment generated a 300x return, with Coda valued at $2.5 billion according to Bloomberg. Together, his team has contributed to the founding of 200 businesses worldwide. Of those, 21 have a market value greater than 100 billion yen (about $700 million). FinAccel and Razorpay are two other unicorns that the VC has funded using money from this fund. GMO Venture Partners announced the debut of its most recent ESG and fintech-focused fund in July 2021. The Indo-Pacific area will benefit from the $100 million fund's use.
