Blockchain and How it Could Transform the Education Sector
Dr Mohamed Ariff Ameedeen, Chief Information Officer, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, 0
Blockchain is a type of digital ledger that eliminates the need for middlemen like banks or other financial institutions and instead enables safe and transparent transactions between parties. A blockchain is fundamentally a decentralized database that is run by a network of computers, or nodes, which collaborate to keep a transparent and impenetrable record of transactions.
Each block in a blockchain contains a set of transactions, and once a block is added to the chain, it cannot be altered or deleted. This creates an immutable and transparent record of transactions that can be used for a variety of purposes, from financial transactions to supply chain management, voting systems, identity verification, and more.
Advantages of Using Blockchain
One of the most significant advantages of using blockchain technology is its ability to create secure and transparent records of transactions without the need for intermediaries. By eliminating intermediaries such as banks or other financial institutions, blockchain technology can reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve transparency in a variety of industries.
For example, in the financial sector, blockchain technology has enabled the creation of digital currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, which can be securely and transparently transferred between parties without the need for intermediaries. This has the potential to reduce transaction costs, increase financial inclusion, and enable more efficient and transparent financial systems.
In addition, blockchain technology can also be used to increase transparency and accountability in supply chain management. By using a blockchain-based system, businesses can track the origin and movement of their products, ensuring that they are ethically and sustainably produced and distributed. This can help build consumer trust and also enable businesses to operate more sustainably and responsibly.
Moreover, blockchain technology can also be used for identity verification. By using a blockchain-based platform, individuals can securely and privately store their personal data, and only grant access to selected parties. This can help prevent identity theft and fraud, and also enable more efficient and secure verification processes.
How can Blockchain help Transform the Education Sector?
As a 17-year-old veteran in the education sector, I am excited to explore the potential benefits of blockchain technology for my industry. I believe that blockchain has the potential to revolutionize the way we store, track, and share educational records, as well as, enable greater transparency and accountability in the education ecosystem.
Blockchain technology has the potential to transform the education sector in numerous ways. One of the most significant advantages of blockchain in education is its ability to create secure and tamper-proof records of academic achievements, such as diplomas, degrees, and certificates.
Traditionally, students receive physical certificates or diplomas upon graduation, which are prone to damage, loss, and tampering. Blockchain technology can help overcome these challenges by creating a decentralized and tamper-proof digital record of academic achievements. This can provide greater security and transparency, and also enable students to easily share their academic credentials with potential employers or educational institutions.
In 2018, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) developed their first blockchain solution; UMP Valid8, to digitize student certificates. This involved creating a digital twin of the certificate and storing it in a decentralized environment to minimize the risk of tampering. While UMP Valid8 is still in use today, it is important to acknowledge that blockchain technology has progressed significantly since its creation.
In addition, blockchain technology can be used to track and verify student attendance and progress. By using a blockchain-based system, educational institutions can create an immutable and transparent record of student attendance and academic progress. This can help ensure that students receive proper credit for their academic work and can also assist in identifying and addressing areas where students may need additional support.
Furthermore, blockchain technology can also enable the creation of decentralized and secure educational marketplaces, where students can access educational resources such as e-books, online courses, and other digital learning materials. With a blockchain-based platform, students can securely and transparently purchase or access these educational resources without the need for intermediaries such as publishers or educational institutions.
Finally, blockchain technology can also be used to create decentralized and transparent systems for educational funding and scholarship management. With a blockchain-based platform, donors can securely and transparently donate to educational institutions or specific scholarship programs, and students can track the progress of their scholarship applications in a tamper-proof and transparent manner.
Challenges of Implementing Blockchain in Education
While the potential benefits of using blockchain technology in education are significant, there are also several challenges that must be addressed in order to successfully implement blockchain-based systems in the education sector.
One of the most significant challenges is ensuring that blockchain-based systems are user-friendly and accessible to all stakeholders in the education sector, including students, educators, administrators, and employers. In order for blockchain-based systems to be widely adopted, they must be easy to use and integrate seamlessly with existing systems and workflows.
In addition, there are also concerns around data privacy and security, as blockchain-based systems require the storage and sharing of sensitive personal information. It is essential that blockchain-based systems are designed with robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access or tampering of data.
Another challenge is the lack of standardization and interoperability across different blockchain platforms. In order for blockchain-based systems to be widely adopted in the education sector, there must be agreed-upon standards and protocols for data sharing and interoperability across different blockchain platforms.
Finally, there is also a need for greater awareness and education around blockchain technology among stakeholders in the education sector. Many educators, administrators, and students may be unfamiliar with blockchain technology and its potential applications in the education sector, and therefore may be hesitant to adopt it.
Conclusion
Blockchain technology has the potential to transform the education sector by creating secure, transparent, and decentralized systems for academic records, student attendance and progress tracking, educational marketplaces, and funding and scholarship management. However, there are also several challenges that must be addressed to successfully implement blockchain-based systems in the education sector, including user-friendliness, data privacy and security, standardization and interoperability, and awareness and education.
Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of using blockchain technology in the education sector are significant, and it is likely that we will see increasing adoption of blockchain-based systems in the coming years. By leveraging the unique capabilities of blockchain technology, educators, administrators, and students can create more efficient, transparent, and accessible systems for teaching and learning, enabling greater educational opportunities for all.
