US President Deploys Emergency Powers to Boost Mineral Production

US President Donald Trump is deploying emergency powers to boost domestic production of essential minerals to decrease the US’ dependency on imports from nations like China.
The executive order is believed to leverage legislation from the Cold War era, directs government agencies, including the Department of Defense, to prioritize mining initiatives and offers both technical and financial assistance to enhance critical mineral production.
This move arises amid an escalating trade conflict with China, which possesses significant control over the supply chain of certain crucial minerals.
Last year, China had prohibited the export of specific essential minerals to the US, compelling American companies to seek alternative sources for these vital materials.
"It is imperative for our national security that the US take immediate action to facilitate domestic mineral production to the maximum possible extent."
The decree is also said to emphasise the acceleration of permits for mining and processing initiatives and instructs the US Department of the Interior to focus on mineral extraction on federal lands.
Despite having access to some critical mineral deposits, the US remains heavily dependent on external countries for its resources.
Trump's tariffs on a broad array of imports have intensified trade frictions with key suppliers, including China and Canada.
Critical minerals are essential for the manufacture of important technologies that range from batteries to advanced weaponry.
Trump has also expressed a desire to access Ukraine's critical mineral resources.
In addition to Ukraine, the US is in discussions for a prospective agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo concerning its mineral assets.
