Sustainability Boost for New York's Fashion Industry
Governor Kathy Hochul Commends New York Fashion Industry's Economic Impact at Fashion Week Kick-Off . New York Governor Kathy Hochul has praised the state's renowned fashion sector for its pivotal role in driving economic growth. As New York Fashion Week commences, Governor Hochul highlighted the industry's substantial impact on employment, providing jobs for approximately 312,000 people and contributing over $24 billion in annual salaries across the state. The fashion sector also plays a crucial role in promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship on a national level.
Governor Hochul unveiled recommendations from the Natural Textile Development Workgroup aimed at enhancing the economic contribution of natural fibers and textiles to New York's economy. Notably, the Governor has allocated a $5 million investment in hemp and biobased product processing in the budget, supporting the production of fibers for apparel and design.
Assembled by Empire State Development, the Department of Agriculture and Markets, and key stakeholders in the textile industry, the Natural Textile Development Workgroup focuses on researching and boosting the economic role of natural fibers and textiles in the state. Objectives include expanding employment, encouraging private investment, fostering new companies in the sector, and raising public awareness about the benefits of natural fiber textiles.
