SouthSouth Korea's state-run utility company, Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), has announced the successful connection of the fourth unit of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the nation's power transmission grid. The Unit 4 plant, which commenced operations earlier this month, delivered its first megawatts of carbon-free electricity.

According to KEPCO, commercial operation of Unit 4 is anticipated to commence later this year following additional tests. Once operational, Unit 4 will contribute an additional 1,400 megawatts of zero-carbon emission electricity to the UAE's grid, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

This milestone marks a significant achievement for South Korea, as the Barakah nuclear power plant project represents the country's first export of a domestically developed commercial atomic power plant. The project, comprising four nuclear reactors, was awarded to a KEPCO-led consortium in 2009 under a $20 billion contract. Located 270 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi, the Barakah plant is poised to play a crucial role in meeting the UAE's energy needs, with the four units expected to produce up to 25% of the country's electricity upon full commercial operation.

KEPCO Chief Kim Dong-cheol expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating that it brings the UAE reactor project closer to successful completion. He affirmed KEPCO's commitment to ensuring the project's success and highlighted South Korea's intention to further expand cooperation in the energy sector with the UAE. Additionally, Kim emphasized South Korea's active pursuit of additional nuclear power plant projects abroad.

The successful connection of Unit 4 of the Barakah nuclear power plant underscores the ongoing collaboration between South Korea and the UAE in advancing sustainable energy solutions and underscores South Korea's capabilities in the global nuclear energy market.
